The sad news came through today that The Crocodile Hunter Steve Irwin has died after getting stabbed by a Stingray barb in the chest whilst diving in the Great Barrier Reef.  He was filming a new documentary at the time, paramedics were flown into nearby Low Isles but he was already dead. it is believed that the injury may have caused a heart attack.

For most people he will be remembered for his near reckless behaviour around wild creatures that we usually watch from behind cages and safety glass. He seemed especially fond of poking them with sticks to get a reaction. He was also a movie star with his own movie in 2002 Crocodile Hunter: Collision Course, I even saw him recently on Jay Leno’s Show of which he was a regular. In 2004 he got a lot of criticism for feeding a crocodile whilst holding his baby but it never really affected his popularity too much. You could see that he was very passionate about animals with a very infectious enthusiasm. I think he will be sorely missed from our screens. To be honest I suppose most people expected something to get him eventually, but it’s still a shock to hear.
